Brexit Project
Brexit By Rachel Morris
Define Brexit The potential or hypothetical departure or withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union. This decision was made with the referendum to leave the EU on June 23rd 2016.
Historical Background This conflict stretches back almost a century. The EEC and the UK disagreed majorly and as a result tensions began to rise in 1984. At the time, the UK was the 3rd poorest nation in the community, as a result of this they paid a lot more into the budget than other countries. David Cameron who was brought in to protect Britain’s financial sector became the 1st Prime Minister to veto a EU treaty in 2011. In early 2013, Cameron gave a speech about how he would negotiate membership within the EU but only if his Conservative Party won a majority in the next general election. Support was growing among british voters for the UK Independence Party (UKIP). After winning the election in May 2015, Cameron renegotiated the UK-EU relationship. In february 2016, he announced the results of the negotiations and set June 23rd as the date of the promised referendum.
Why did the UK decide to leave the EU? Respondents who emphasised the national and personal economic costs of leaving the EU voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU. Regarding community, the data collected from the survey suggested that if people believed that leaving the EU would reduce immigrations and help to protect Britain from terrorism they were very likely to vote for brexit. The UK votes showed a narrow margin but the UK had voted to leave the EU, Cameron submitted his resignation the following day.
Positive Impacts of Brexit on Ireland Foreign investment earmarked for the UK may now come to Ireland.
This is the only positive impact on ireland.
Negative Impacts of Brexit on Ireland The UK is Ireland’s biggest trading partner Total employment could decrease by 40,000 jobs. Higher tariffs and import taxes. Prices will be highered in the shops. 52% of irish beef, 84% of irish poultry and 60% of irish cheese all go to the UK. 1.1 billion euro - 2.7 billion euro of Ireland’s Gross Domestic Products
Should Ireland now leave the EU because the UK have? Ireland must give serious consideration to leaving now that the UK have left. The UK provides a lot for Ireland and vice versa so now that the UK are out of the picture ireland could be left with many major problems involving our imports and exports of all items. There are many indications as to why Ireland should leave the EU, but does Ireland have the financial stability to do so? Ireland has just come out of a recession and probably needs a couple more years to discuss and negotiate if leaving the EU would be in Ireland’s best interests.
